Taxi prices are per vehicle and cover everyone travelling. Train fares are per person, so the comparison changes sharply once there are two or more of you.
Why black cab fares swing by £50 on the same route
London black cabs run on the Transport for London meter, which charges for distance and for time whenever the cab drops below 10.4 mph. Traffic is not a delay on your fare, it is part of your fare.
Under the tariffs that took effect on 25 April 2026, the minimum fare is £4.40. Tariff 1 (Monday to Friday daytime) works out at roughly £4.10 per mile, Tariff 2 (evenings and weekends) at £4.95 per mile, and Tariff 3 (nights and public holidays) at £5.25 per mile. On an 18-mile run into the West End, that per-mile difference alone is worth about £20 before a single traffic light turns red.
That is why the same journey can read £78 on a Tuesday lunchtime and £125 on a Friday at 6pm. A fixed-price Heathrow airport taxi removes that variable entirely: the number quoted when you book is the number you pay, whatever the M4 is doing.
The extras that get added to a Heathrow fare
Headline prices rarely tell the whole story. These are the charges that appear on Heathrow journeys and catch people out:
- Airport rank fee (£1.60): added to black cab fares picked up from the official taxi ranks outside arrivals.
- Heathrow drop-off charge (£7): payable by any vehicle that pulls onto a terminal forecourt. This hits your journey to the airport rather than your arrival, so check whether it is inside or outside your quote when booking a departure.
- Terminal car park charge: incurred on arrivals when your driver parks and meets you inside. Some operators pass this on; ours is already in the quote.
- Waiting time: if your flight lands late and there is no free grace period, the clock starts on arrival, not on yours.
- Congestion Charge: applies to destinations inside the central zone during charging hours.
- Vehicle upgrade: four passengers with four large cases will not fit a saloon, and being moved to a bigger car at the rank costs more than booking the right one in the first place.

Group size and luggage change the fare more than most travellers expect. Booking two saloons for six people almost always costs more than one people carrier:

Is a taxi cheaper than the train from Heathrow?
It depends entirely on how many of you are travelling, because a taxi price is per car and a rail fare is per head.
- Travelling alone with hand luggage: the Piccadilly line at £5.90 or the Elizabeth line at £15.50 is unbeatable on price.
- Two people: £31 on the Elizabeth line, plus a short cab or Tube hop at the other end with your cases.
- Three people: £46.50, and the gap to a £65 door-to-door car is now small.
- Four people: £62 on the train against £65 in a saloon that collects you at arrivals and stops outside your hotel. The taxi is effectively the same money with none of the escalators.
- Family or group of five or more: one people carrier is comfortably cheaper than five rail tickets.
Rail fares also stop at a station, not at your door. If your hotel is a 12-minute walk from Liverpool Street with two suitcases, the true cost includes the taxi you end up taking anyway. The same logic applies to our station taxi service for onward legs.
How long does the journey actually take?
Budget 45 to 70 minutes for central London in ordinary conditions. Between 07:00 and 10:00 and again from 16:00 to 19:00, the same run regularly stretches to 90 minutes. After 22:00 it can drop to 35 to 45 minutes. In a black cab, those extra 30 minutes of crawling are money on the meter. On a fixed fare, they are not.
Six ways to pay less for a Heathrow transfer
- Book before you fly. Fixed pricing set in advance beats both a live meter and app surge pricing, especially on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
- Give your flight number. It lets the driver track your landing and adjust, so a delay does not cost you waiting time or a fresh booking.
- Book the right size, not the biggest. An MPV costs more than a saloon, so only pay for the space you need.
- Use the full postcode. Vague drop-off details are the main reason a quoted price gets revised later.
- Book the return at the same time. Return journeys are cheaper to arrange in one booking than two.
- Check what is included. Ask specifically about terminal parking, the drop-off charge, waiting time and meet and greet. A £55 quote with three add-ons is not a £55 quote.
