Why four hours, not two
The buffer is not padding. It absorbs a realistic sequence: an inbound flight arriving 30 minutes late, 40 minutes to clear immigration at Heathrow on a busy morning, 20 minutes at the baggage belt, and then an M3 or M25 delay that adds another 30. That is two hours consumed before the car has done anything wrong.
Cruise lines usually close check-in 60 to 90 minutes before departure, and many operate timed boarding slots. Missing your slot is inconvenient. Missing check-in means catching the ship at the next port at your own cost.
Flying in the day before
For any cruise departing before midday, or any long-haul inbound flight, arriving the previous day is the sound choice. A hotel night near the port costs far less than a missed sailing, and it removes the entire failure mode.

Cruise luggage is the deciding factor
Cruise passengers carry more than almost any other traveller. Two weeks at sea with formal nights means large cases, and couples routinely travel with three or four between them. A family of four can be at eight pieces.

Which terminal at Southampton
Southampton has several cruise terminals, and they are not next to each other. Ocean, Mayflower, City and Horizon each serve different ships, and turning up at the wrong one on a tight schedule is a genuine risk.
Your cruise line confirms the terminal in your boarding documents, usually a few weeks before sailing. Give that terminal name when you book, not just “Southampton”. The same applies at Dover, which has two cruise terminals.
The return leg is the one people forget
Disembarkation is usually early, often between 07:00 and 09:30, and thousands of passengers leave at once. Taxi availability at the port on a busy Saturday morning is poor, and prices reflect that.
