Taxi to Cruise Terminal from London and the Airports

Heathrow and Gatwick to Southampton

Southampton is the busiest cruise port in the UK. Its five terminals are Ocean, Queen Elizabeth II, City, Mayflower and Horizon. Each one has its own entrance, so give us the terminal name from your cruise documents when you book.

London and the Airports to Dover

Dover’s cruise terminals sit at the Western Docks, at the end of the M20 and A20. Cruise Terminal 1 is the historic building by the seafront. Dover is closest to Gatwick, and from central London the drive is about 2 hours.

Dover is also the busiest ferry port in the UK. On summer weekends and at the start of school holidays, Channel traffic can queue on the A20 into the town. For sailings on those days, we add extra time to your pickup.

Central London to Tilbury and Greenwich

Tilbury is home to the London International Cruise Terminal on the north bank of the Thames in Essex. It is the closest cruise terminal to central London, about 45 minutes to an hour from the City by road. Some smaller ships call at Greenwich instead, which is much closer to central London. Check which one your ticket names before you book, because the two are on opposite sides of the river.

London and Heathrow to Portsmouth

Portsmouth International Port handles both ferries and cruise ships, including sailings by Virgin Voyages and Ambassador Cruise Line. From Heathrow it is about 1 hour 20 minutes on the M25 and A3. If you are sailing from Portsmouth, tell us your cruise line when you book. Ferry and cruise passengers can use different parts of the port.

Harwich, Liverpool, Newcastle and Rosyth

Cruises also leave from ports across the rest of the UK, and we cover them all:

  • Harwich International Port in Essex: about an hour from Stansted.
  • Liverpool Cruise Terminal: on the River Mersey, about 45 minutes from Manchester Airport.
  • Port of Tyne: the cruise terminal at North Shields is around 25 minutes from Newcastle Airport.
  • Rosyth, across the Forth from Edinburgh: under 20 minutes from Edinburgh Airport.

How Early Should You Arrive at the Cruise Terminal?

Arrive at the time your cruise line gives you, not hours before. Most cruise lines give each cabin an arrival time slot on the boarding pass. Southampton’s own advice is to arrive no more than 15 to 30 minutes before your slot, because if you arrive too early you may be asked to wait outside.

We plan your pickup to reach the terminal in that window. We also add a buffer for the motorway, so you are never cutting it fine.

If your group has been given different arrival times, travel together at the later time, not the earlier one. Some cruise lines, including P&O Cruises, advise this so that nobody is turned away for arriving too soon.

Flying in on the Day You Sail

If you are flying into Heathrow or Gatwick on the day your cruise leaves, leave a big gap. A delayed flight, a slow passport queue and a busy M25 can quickly eat into the time before the ship’s cut off. Most experienced cruisers fly in the day before and stay near the port. If you do that, we can collect you from the airport, take you to your hotel, and pick you up again on sailing day.

What Time Do You Get Off a Cruise Ship?

On the last morning, ships usually arrive in port very early. Passengers then leave in groups over a few hours, and most are off by mid morning. Your cruise line gives you a group number or a time slot, often on a luggage tag. Tell us that time when you book your return transfer, or message us from the ship the night before.

Your driver plans the collection around your slot and waits at the pick up area. If customs or the baggage hall runs late, the wait is covered by your free hour.

If you are flying home on the same day, most people book flights from the early afternoon onwards. A morning flight leaves too little room if getting off the ship runs late.

How Much Luggage Can You Take on a Cruise?

Many cruise lines allow far more luggage than an airline, and formal nights mean suit carriers and extra shoes. That is why the vehicle matters more for a cruise than for a flight.

Use this as a guide when you book:

  • Two people with two large cases each: book an estate, not a saloon.
  • A family of four with four large cases and cabin bags: book a people carrier.
  • Six to eight people, or anyone with golf bags or a mobility scooter that folds: book the 8 seater minibus.
  • Garment bags and hat boxes: mention them when you book so they can lie flat.
